Before working in education I worked within the security industry, wanting to do something during the day I started to work as a learning mentor. Now with over 16 years experience of working in education, my career started working within pastoral care specialising in extreme behaviours and removing barriers to learning, whilst working as a non teaching Head of Year. Whilst Head of Year I was asked to take a Year 11 Maths group who were labelled un-teachable. Upon taking this role I found that the students simply required a different approach, focusing on building strong relationships and finding different ways for them to learn. Once in the classroom I realised that I could be more help to the students teaching rather than in my role within the pastoral care team. I worked within a Maths department developing my subject knowledge whilst continuing to work with difficult groups. Taking an unconventional route into teaching I completed a degree in education and professional development receiving a 2:1 from Huddersfield University. At EDClass I try to continue to make Maths more accessible and support students who use a different platform.
